Successful startup communities

Real communities are a collective responsibility

Real communities are a collective responsibility

Welcome back reader,

We wanted to share a brief update this month, by highlighting important practices that we've seen across successful initiatives by ecosystems we've been engaged with

Creating playbooks, measuring key performance indicators, and developing group practices is critical part of the technical and business aspects of startups, and it is particularly important to remember the fundamentals during changing landscapes

Every great story has luck and preparation. Behind every exit with hundreds of new millionaires, there’s many forgotten moments from behind the scenes, while a panicked founder texting every VC they can "We need to cover payroll this Friday." And someone showing up.

As facilitators in a network, is important to focus on personal connections, to cultivate a culture where these kinds of critical moments are met with care, trust, and action

Real communities are a collective responsibility

🏗️ Architecture of a Startup Community

Every startup community is built on a few non-negotiable pillars:

Trust and Reciprocity

Agile Startups are cooperative environments, they’re fragile, evolving experiments. They need to know that when they reach out — for funding, intros, emotional support — they’ll be met with help, not judgment. That’s what makes a startup community more than just networking.

Providing valuable resources and services can stretch the runway, and help the team make more assertive decisions. A space where is safe to fail removes anxiety and promotes adventure.

Shared Mission

Communities and individuals trying to “getting ahead” burn out fast. They can have fleeting success with a grant or land a contract, but being able to deliver requires unexpected connections. While some funds see success after success, some offices shut down after draining municipal resources and disappointing founders

Emphasize mutual accountability, invest back in the community with angel checks, event sponsorships and contracts. Your contributions add genuine value to others, as the rising tide saying goes

I am because we areUmuntu ngumuntu ngabantu

Cultura

A healthy workplace culture is a great antidote to many HR and compliance problems that plague growing companies. Founders should prioritize technical excellence, complimented with kindness, purpose, and transparence

As Paul G teaches in build things that don't scale. The founders who build with integrity, and focus on customer satisfaction will find themselves invited again

With smaller rounds and higher return expectations, is important to validate correctly and invest with confidence in a trusted environment

Broad horizons

Silicon valley had a big convergence of hippies thinking outside the box and building in a garage, fueled by convictions and unconventional life choices

In Latin America, innovation isn’t about mimicking a county in California, It’s about reclaiming the brilliance of our peoples and integrating the new technology - agroforestry systems, biodiversity preservation and cooperation are familiar to to most leaders

Understanding your local resources, the state of the ecosystem and the material challenges of your community is important to find your unique advantage and improve your chances

Tomorrow Today

A Seed round might be fun but is just the beginning, success It’s measured decades down the line.

Are your vendors still with you? Are your early hires thriving? Did your MVP evolve into a business that people love?

Thinking about the legacy and dreams you're building, specifically seeing various players succeed, is a great motivation and gives you months of roadmaps

🦋 Valleys and Datacenters

Working with farmers, construction companies, couriers, is something that the best are doing. Having access to reliable office deployments, large networking infrastructure, printing thousands of sweaters for a conference, is all helpful to your ecosystem. Consider as many players as you can to build a resilient network with fun opportunities for everyone engaged

Like a literal seed, the quality of the soil and ecosystem are key factors on the legacy of the sprout

Create accountability, quality, and shared victories
